Fencing done properly, locally
Ely Fencing is based at Little Downham, three miles north of Ely. We supply and install fencing and gates for homeowners, landlords, farms and businesses across Ely, Littleport, Soham, Witchford, Haddenham, Stretham, Sutton and into Cambridge.
Fen ground moves. Peat shrinks in a dry summer and holds water in winter - it's why so many fences round here start leaning after a few seasons. We set posts to depths that allow for it, use concrete posts and gravel boards where the ground calls for them, and we'll tell you honestly when a repair will do instead of a full replacement.
If you want to know exactly what we're fitting, we'll put you straight through to our suppliers. Not many fencing companies will do that.

No sales patter. These are things you can actually check.
We won't fit the cheapest timber
There's always a cheaper panel. It'll be thinner, lower grade and it'll fail sooner. We quote honestly and fit something that lasts.
Talk to our suppliers yourself
If you want to check exactly what we're proposing, we'll give you our suppliers' details and you can ask them direct. Almost nobody in this trade offers that.
Happy to fit your own materials
Already bought your panels or sourced something specific? That's fine - we'll install materials you've supplied yourself.
We build for Fen ground
Peat shrinks and swells. We set posts to depths that allow for it, rather than fitting the same fence you'd put in on Cambridge clay.
Repair before replace
If two posts and a gravel board will fix it, we'll say so. We're not going to sell you thirty metres of fence you don't need.
We clear up properly
Old fencing, concrete bases and offcuts all go with us. You get your garden back the same day we finish.

Answers to the things we're asked most often.
How much does a new garden fence cost?
It depends on the fence type, the ground and access. Rather than making you ring round for a figure, we publish real per-metre ranges on our fencing prices page so you can budget first.
How long does it take to install a garden fence?
Most domestic gardens are done in one to two days once we start. Your written quote will confirm the timescale. We'll also give you a realistic lead time when you enquire.
Do I need planning permission for a garden fence?
Usually not. A rear garden fence can generally be up to 2 metres high, and up to 1 metre where it runs alongside a highway or footpath. There are exceptions for listed buildings and conservation areas - parts of Ely fall inside one. Our guide on garden fence height rules covers it in full.
Which side of the fence is mine?
There's no universal rule, despite the widespread belief that it's always the left-hand side. Ownership is shown by T-marks on your title plan from HM Land Registry. We've written a plain-English guide to working out who owns the garden fence.
Do you take the old fence away?
Yes. We remove and dispose of the old fencing, including concreted post bases, and leave the site clear. It's included in the price unless your quote says otherwise.
Do I have to buy the materials from you?
No. If you'd rather supply your own materials we're happy to install them. We can also supply materials without installation if you're fitting the fence yourself.
