Closeboard (also written close board) fencing is made from vertical feather-edge boards fixed to horizontal arris rails between posts. Unlike ready-made panels, each board is nailed on individually, so the fence acts as one continuous structure rather than a run of separate units.
It is the usual choice for a solid rear or side boundary where you want privacy, strength and a fence that will still be upright in fifteen years - especially on exposed Fen sites where wind and soft ground punish weaker panels.

Closeboard is usually built on site from vertical feather-edge boards nailed to arris rails between posts. You can also buy closeboard-style panels. Site-built closeboard is stronger because every board is fixed individually and the structure is continuous along the run.
There is no legal rule that the "good" side must face the neighbour. Conventionally the smooth face goes outward and the rails face your garden - but ownership is decided by T-marks on your title plan, not by which side looks nicer. See our guide on who owns the garden fence.
Closeboard is stronger and usually lasts longer. Panels are quicker and cheaper to fit and easier to swap if one bay is hit. For a long rear boundary that needs to last, we usually recommend closeboard. For a shorter run or tighter budget, fence panels are fine.
With pressure-treated timber, concrete posts and gravel boards keeping the boards off wet ground, 15-25 years is realistic in Cambridgeshire. Soft peat, poor post depths and cheap untreated timber shorten that.
